Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application developed by Ledger, the company behind the popular hardware wallets like Ledger Nano S Plus and Ledger Nano X. It acts as a bridge between your Ledger hardware wallet and the blockchain. With Ledger Live, you can securely manage your crypto assets, install apps for different blockchains, stake crypto, and track your portfolio — all while your private keys remain safely stored offline on your Ledger device.
Go to ledger.com/ledger-live and download the latest version for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or get it from the App Store or Google Play for mobile. Always download from the official Ledger website to avoid scams or phishing sites.
Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the prompts. After installation, open the app. Ledger Live will ask you to set a password lock — this encrypts your local app data and adds an extra layer of security if someone accesses your computer.
If you have a new Ledger device, select "Set up a new device" in Ledger Live and follow the instructions. This involves generating your 24-word recovery phrase on the hardware wallet screen. Write it down carefully and keep it offline. Never share it.
If you already have a device, choose "Connect your device" and enter your existing recovery phrase on the hardware wallet when prompted.
Ledger Live will automatically check your device’s firmware. If there’s an update, install it by following the prompts. Next, open the Manager tab in Ledger Live. Here you can install blockchain apps, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana, onto your Ledger device. Each cryptocurrency needs its own app installed on the hardware wallet.
Once the apps are installed, go to the Accounts tab and click “Add account.” Select the crypto you want to add, connect and unlock your Ledger device, then open the corresponding app on your hardware wallet. Ledger Live will scan the blockchain and add your account(s). Repeat this for each crypto you want to manage.
To receive crypto, click “Receive”, choose the crypto asset, and connect your Ledger device. Verify the receiving address displayed on Ledger Live matches the one on your hardware wallet’s screen. This step prevents address tampering. Copy the verified address and share it with the sender.
To send crypto, click “Send,” select your account, and enter the recipient’s address and amount. Confirm the transaction details. Ledger Live will prompt you to connect and unlock your device. Verify and approve the transaction on the hardware wallet screen. The transaction will then be broadcasted to the blockchain.
Ledger Live shows your portfolio balance, asset allocation, and transaction history. You can also use Ledger Live to stake certain coins (like ETH, ATOM, or DOT) to earn rewards directly within the app.
Regularly check for app and firmware updates in Ledger Live. Keeping your device and apps up to date helps protect you against bugs and vulnerabilities.
